LEATHER AND TYPES OF LEATHER

LEATHER

Leather is a flexible material created by tanning animal and skins. It is used for a variety of purposes, including clothing, footwear, furniture, and accessories. The process of making leather involves curing the hides with salt, removing hair, and then treating the skin with oils and preservatives to prevent it from decomposing. Leather can be further treated with dyes and finishes to give it a specific color or texture.

TYPES OF LEATHER

There are several types of leather, including full-grain leather, top-grain leather, genuine leather, bonded leather, and split leather.

Full-grain leather is the highest quality leather and is made from the top layer of cowhide. It is the most durable and develops a unique patina over time.

Top-grain leather is also made from the top layer of cowhide, but it has been sanded and finished to remove imperfections. It is more uniform in color and texture than full-grain leather.

Genuine leather is a term that can be used to describe any type of leather, but it generally refers to lower-quality leather made from the inner layers of cowhide.

Bonded leather is made from scraps of leather that have been shredded and then bonded together with adhesive.

Split leather is made from the lower layers of cowhide and is less durable than top-grain or full-grain leather. It is often used to make suede.
